ArcticIndex To Make The Community Tick
There are roughly 350 startups and 200 individuals already listed in ArcticIndex. This is becoming an increasingly important destination and a resource for anyone looking for information on any startup that comes from the Northern Europe.
We have heard of cases where an investors have heard about a startup and subsequently contacted them (and sometimes even invested) when they have been able to look up a name from the ArcticIndex. Same goes for the media. We break stories on many new startups that the big media then picks up and writes about. Yes, you guessed it: ArcticIndex is where they go check out the facts on those startups.
If you have a startup and have not listed yours yet, do it now. And if you have yours listed, do update your information! Why? Because this is the information that gets printed and looked at as a fact. So if you have had subsequent financing rounds, new key employees, product releases, do yourself a favor and write it in the ArcticIndex, since this is what the readers, investors and the media will judge your startup by. This is also where we pick up new startups to write about.
Investors
Needless to say, same goes for the investors. It's not very easy to find investors in the region no matter how great a startup one has. So a natural destination for startups is to check out ArcticIndex for investors to contact. Whether you are a business angel, a seed fund or a full blown VC fund, do list yourself in the ArcticIndex.
Jobs

Not only that, it's also 100% free to list your company, job postings and events in ArcticIndex.
What's to come?
A lot more is coming as we want to build the Index to serve your needs better. Now you have the opportunity to let us know what you'd like to see to be build here. Hi Ville,
sounds like there's exciting times ahead, good to hear!
I thought you and other readers might be interested in having a look at an Australian startup and service called 'IPitch' based in Sydney:
IPitch profile on IPitch
Sounds like they offer a similar service to ArcticIndex and CrunchBase, with some extra focus on investors and making the connection between them and startup founders.
The site was launched only a couple of months ago but looks like it's gaining traction quite nicely. Might be good for some benchmarking I reckon :)
Good luck with AI and AS, it's great reading your updates on what's happening in the Northern Hemisphere startup scene!
Cheers, Jussi
Is this only coincidence or copycat? ArcticIndex was promoted next day after TechCrunch Europe promoted its own index (can see it here: http://uk.techcrunch.com/2009/10/08/help-us-re-fresh-our-european-top-100-index/ ). Hmm... Interesting :)
Lucy,
Hadn't read that one, so coincidence this time, but wouldn't need to be.
Now, TC has its CrunchBase in the US, and TCEU has Top 100 Index. ArcticIndex has been out there for a quite a bit longer than the Top 100 Index and is largely modeled after CrunchBase (for now) to serve this part of the world in the same way as CrunchBase serves mainly the Valley firms.
We realized most the the Northern European startups got buried in CrunchBase when twitters and facebooks got most of the limelight, thus we wanted to give the arctic born firms the opportunity to be found and be seen.
I'm not that familiar with Top 100 Index, but we certainly don't take any companies out of ArcticIndex as they do. Thus, it's called Top 100. Secondly, we don't have sophisticated algorithms in place at ArcticIndex.
And even if there would, it would called competition, not copycat. I'm not quite sure who does your negative comment help?! Certainly not the startups. I believe TC, just as we, are doing this to help the startup scene evolve. And many times we are doing just that together helping each other out.
Great to hear! :) Obviously it is good that there are more than one index for startups in Europe as competition is always good thing. And I honestly wish you all the best! It was just interesting to see those two articles... But really, nothing personal. I equally read AS and TC and wish you allll the best :)
Thanks Lucy. To be honest, healthy criticism is always good and I'm happy to hear and learn from it, but currently we hardly compete head on with TC even if we wanted. I think both have their place in their core markets.
Thanks for dropping IPitch.com.au in there Jussi. I wasn't aware of ArticStartups, so it's a nice benchmark for me is well, seems like a great site. I think the goal of the two is similar, we're placed in smaller more isolated communities that struggle not just with their geography but a simple lack of the community and startup excitement. Australia has no lack of talent, there's just a lack of community, investors interested in tech and connections to help them abroad and that's what we want to help put in place.
If you ever make it down this way, drop us a line and we'll tour you around our startup scene.
Will do. Thanks Rachel!
Ville,
I have gone through tech crunch it site but its differentiated from arctic start up by many features, focus and of course design. However,am thinking it would be wise to consider expanding to other regions but retain the focus on Nordic and Baltic region. This will enable information hungry members of the fourth estate, start ups and graduates to get get information in one stop shop.Consider how to In corporate other languages as well.Arctic start up has a strategy that no amount of copycats efforts will thwart it from thriving.
