Menyou Helps Artists Sell Music
Money, web and music often do not go together. A new Swedish start-up has set out to change that: Menyou offers a platform for uploading, selling and reselling audio-visual content. Anyone can upload their masterpiece onto Menyou and other users can purchase or resell it, getting a small cut from the generated profit. Every time an item is sold or resold, the artist gets most of the revenue and Manyou takes a small cut from the overall transaction. The platform was being developed since 2009 and the website's open alpha version has been live since October 2010.
Spotify, Soundcloud, Voddler, Flattr - Sweden seems to be a fertile ground for services that either monetize digital content or support independent artists. Menyou joins those ranks with a promising idea and a fine execution. Their website is sleek and one of their co-founders - Mattias Lindberg - is known for being a brilliant flash designer working with animation, music videos, commercials and web design.
It's too early to say if Menyou is a real game-changer. Independent artists make up for a small segment in the overall music industry, though their numbers seem to be growing. The biggest value Menyou offers here is helping avoid the middleman when selling your own music.
Whether or not people would purchase that music is another matter. Internet users have generally been avoiding paying for online content any way they could. However, songs on Menyou are priced at about 1€ so the barrier to purchase is not high at all. Besides, the content on offer is quite unique, which provides extra value for music enthusiasts. To avoid paying PayPal charges every time you shop on the website, Menyou thoughtfully provides special credits for purchase. That makes micropayments much easier and faster.
Right now the website offers a bit over 250 albums. No figures are known regarding their membership numbers or revenue stream. Let's wait and see what the future brings for Menyou!
