Startup Weekend Copenhagen Goes Mobile
The concept of Startup Weekend has probably become familiar to any entrepreneur. The event gathers entrepreneurial-minded developers, designders and business master-minds to share ideas, form teams, build products and launch startups all in 54 hours. Start-up scene in Denmark has been very active with such events: a total of 6 were hosted over the last few years. Between June 24th-26th this year another such event will take place there, this time with a special twist - Mobile Copenhagen Startup Weekend. Ticket prices vary from 100-450 DKK (~13-60€) and judging by previous events they would go fast.
Inspiration for the event's theme came after Nokia decided to shut down their product development center in Copenhagen, making 700 engineers jobless. 'That constitutes a major talent pool which has to be repositioned to other jobs or, better yet, encouraged to become entrepreneurs', comments Alex Farcet, the chief organizer of Startup Weekend in Denmark and co-founder of Startupbootcamp. Thus, in collaboration with Nokia and Startupbootcamp, a mobile-themed Startup Weekend was created.
There are three great examples of existing companies that emerged from previous Startup Weekends in Copenhagen. Planely (an application for social flying), AutoButler (local site with autoshop reviews) and the now famous Memolane (social application for recording and sharing life events), which went on to raise $2M in venture capital.
As Alex puts it: 'There's a huge base of Startup Weekend fanatics who are ready to be activated and it made a lot of sense to try to combine the very best technical, product and design talent from Nokia with this crowd. Our hope is that real startups will come out of the event, but more importantly we're going to give a taste of entrepreneurship to a crowd of people who are likely to be receptive, and motivated, to start new projects.'
A lot of spots have been reserved for Nokia employees and mobile enthusiasts but the event is open for people with any kind of background. Moreover, no platform is given priority in the event so Android, iOS, RIM are welcome.
Startup Weekend is a non-profit organization run out of the US. Hundreds of events have been run all over the world in 38 countries and 65 events are planned in Europe for 2011 alone.
