Calling all Nordic & Baltic Android Developers

Oi yous lot! Shut up, sit down, close every other tab you’ve got open right now and focus on me. Go on, do it, I can wait.

Done? Right, let’s talk.

You’ve worked hard on building an app haven’t you. Probably the best damn app there ever was and ever will be, at least until you make the next one, amiright? Now you want that app to be accessible to as many people as possible and on a every store out there. Well there’s this new one you might have heard of called the Nokia Store. Yeah that Nokia.

They’ve made their own Android app store because they’ve started building and selling their own Android phones under the banner of Nokia X. Thing is your lovely, wonderful Android apps won’t run on the Nokia X phones. Nokia are using AOSP (Android Open Source Project) which doesn’t come with Gmail, the Google Play Store, Google Maps, and the whole host of Google apps which you don’t even think about when you pick up an Android phone.

Now Nokia have gone to a lot of effort to fill in the gaps with their own services, so what you need to learn to do is point your apps at their services instead of the Google ones the Nokia X phones don’t have.

Good thing Nokia, in partnership with us here at Arctic Startup, are running a series of portathons where you can bring your apps to a Nokia engineer who will show you what changes need to made. It’s simple enough that Nokia believe if you come with your laptop and dev software you’ll be able to port apps at the workshop and get them on the Nokia Store the same day. They should know since that’s what a number of Lithuanian Android developers were able to do at our first event in Vilnius last week.

So what you want to know now is where and when we’ll be holding these events, feast your eyes on this list, find the closest, then go and register your interest. We look forward to seeing you there.
