“Creativity just went mobile”, Jonas Hombert, CEO JayCut
JayCut, the Swedish online video editor startup will as of today be available on Moblin-based ultra-portable devices like netbooks and mobile internet devices (MIDs). Moblin is an open source Linux operating system which is optimized for Intel® Atom™ processor based devices. JayCut’s been working closely with Intel on the new Moblin v2 that offers advanced Internet, media and social networking experiences. The mobile editor is primarly launched within their white label product, but hang in there, a public version is on its way, too. Jonas Hombert, CEO JayCut, is excited about moving on to the mobile space with MIDs, thus changing the way content producers and publishers will work in the future. Having the publishing system in ones pocket gets publishers whole new opportunities to interact with its audience closer to real-time.
JayCut, the Swedish startup offering online video editing technology, can add another achievement on it’s list. They were recently selected as one of this years Red Herring 100 Europe winners. Congrats!
Since we last talked to JayCut, they have been busy developing a new editor. Last weekend I attended a blogger and tech geek event in Sweden’s first nuclear reactor R1, and got a demo by Jonas Hombert, the CEO of JayCut.
JayCut, a Swedish startup, offers online video editing and watching technology for businesses to license and for the public to use. The company enables me to do everything I do with for example iMovie, but in the browser. Thus, I don’t need to download any clients, and I can save my videos in the cloud. Not only that, JayCut makes video editing also easier compared to what it is with the usual suspects such as iMovie. That said, there’s room for improvement as for example the transition effects did not work quite as I had hoped for (see video in my next blog post tonight).
Below is a short video demostration by JayCut staff on how easy the video editing is:
JayCut offers the following services:
Online video editing technology, fully branded and integrated
Complete solutions including editing, watching, uploading and community features
Advertising campaigns letting visitors edit for example their own TV commercials
Despite being a very young startup, JayCut has already achieved a lot in many fronts. They are the provider of a complete video solution to IKEA, which was launched in August 2008 (read more about IKEA partnership here in Swedish). They also picked up the SIME Innovation Day Award 2008 from Google, Telenor and Ericsson. Entertainment Site of the Year 2007 (awarded by a Swedish language e-business site Internetworld), Young European Entrepreneur of the Year 2007 in Business Week, Top 5 Swedish Enterpreneur of the Year 2007 in Internetworld, CNET Webware 100 Video Finalist and last but not least, they secured a small angel funding round in 2007.
The company was founded in 2007 and if already profitable from licensing the editing tool and their video platform. After talkign to JayCut CEO, Jonas Hombert, he said that having so many competitors disappear (Eyespot, bankrupcy; Flektor, removed editing service; Jumpcut, put in deadpool by Yahoo) JayCut is a big fan of the economic crisis. A healthy counter perspective to the very common recession mongering in the industry these days. MotionBox is one of the competitors still actively challenging JayCut’s service.
JayCut is soon releasing their new editing tool. Jonas Hombert told us that we can wait the release early 2009. I am sure to follow this Swedish startup and edit most of our videos with JayCut from now on.
The Swedish startups are looking to share expertise, learn from London startups, and meet great contacts. The startups in London are:
Videoplaza.com – An ad server for video – they help companies monetize online video. Jaycut.com – Online video editing – named best entertainment website in Sweden 2007 Bambuser.com – Live broadcasting from mobile phones and webcams – recently received venture backing by a Norwegian firm. (The best bit is that you can get a link send to your Jaiku and Twitter account when you are broadcasting so your friend can go see what you’re up to) Moyu.me – Instant picture messenger – early startup that just launched their service.
I personally instantly fell in love with Bambuser and Jaycut. I already tried Bambuser and it appear to work nicely, although there is a quite a time lag between the time you record it and when the link appear on your Jaiku or Twitter feed to notify your friend.
If you’d like to meet them Anders told me that he’d be happy to meet up. Contact Anders via Twitter (here) with invitations or meet them at the Minibar London at 6pm if you’re already planning on going.
JayCut, founded in 2007, is a Swedish online video editing startup offering free and simple video editing service.
You can upload unlimited amount of videos and photos in a wide variety of file formats to JayCut’s service, and then combine, mix, or trim different clips into one, and add captions and music. You can share the photos, raw video or the finished mixes with friends either using their service, downloading the file to your own computer, iPod, or other device, or sending the files to MySpace, Facebook, YouTube, or your blog. Public videos can also be rated and commented on on their web page. Downloading a file only seems to work in WMV format, and seems to sometimes require some waiting time to get converted before the download can be made. The online service might also be suitable for “open source” film projects like Stray Cinema where people share, re-edit, and mix the raw film footage.
According to some rumors the company has angel financing from London based investors. The business model could be based on including ads in the exported videos, which isn’t probably the best alternative, though. Interestingly the company has roots in student entrepreneurship, as they mention nearly all of the founders have been involved in the entrepreneurship association Excitera at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm.
