Tekes, the Finnish government guys who provide funds to a lot of small, early stage startups, are currently in the middle of a rolling tour around Helsinki. They’ve had a pop up office travelling between Startup Sauna, the Minimum Viable Office, and Uusi tehdas from 22nd November to 16th December.
Editor’s note: This was an unsolicited post by Johanna Eiramo, one of our residents at the Minimum Viable Office, cross-posted from her blog. We need a fresh influx of new startups, so come join us!
Working at the MVO has a hidden advantage that is hard to sell. You’re here and opportunities materialize. Today, I can verify that this is very much the case.
I came to work, found a free desk, open my computer and in walks an old friend, Ismo Rantala of Nest New York fame. He was looking for Will Cardwell (in charge of strategic university partnerships for Aalto University) and Bruce Oreck (US Ambassador to Finland). I haven’t seen either of these two gentlemen in donkey’s years, so I follow Ismo to say Hi! On the way, I find out there’s a pitching session about to start at the Loft, with Will and Bruce doing the sparring. So I grab my computer and here is what I heard:
If you are going to be in Helsinki this Thursday, do stop by our co-working space - The Minimum Viable Office at 7pm local time. We are organizing a get together for those that are either going to the Dublin Web Summit or are just interested in hanging out with startupers. There is no particular schedule or a plan for the event. We are just going to enjoy our "bar area" and network. We will share our knowledge about the event and will encourage everyone to provide some strategies about going to a conference of this size. After all, the idea is to get as much value as possible from the it.
We have also requested some pretty cool interviews with attendees and speakers, and we would love to know what you want us to ask them. Some people we are hopefully going to have a chance to talk to are: Tony Hawk, Drew Houston, Phil Libin, Dave McClure, Shane Smith, Kevin Rose, Tim Armstrong, David Carr and others.
Our Minimum Viable Office co-working space is taking shape and we are ready to host events. One of the first ones to come to MVO will be the Lean Startup Machine workshop that has been run over 125 times in 40 cities worldwide.
It will take place on September 13th-15th at our co-working space. We all know or have heard of the “lean startup” concept, many of us even use the name in our everyday lives. However Lean Startup Machine workshop is aiming to make sure that you live by it and implement it into your daily startup lives.
We've been working on a few projects here at ArcticStartup, but the one that we're really excited to tell you about today is a physical location right in the heart of Helsinki - our new co-working space. We hope that many of you will use it as your headquarters, come there for lunch meetings, or attend an event.
Our space is at an awesome location on Aleksanterinkatu 16-18, right next to the Helsinki Cathedral (aka The Big White Church). There's a few entrances, but the most fun way to access it is through the back hallway in Cafe Köket at the same address. The co-working space comes complete with an event space, the cafe, meeting rooms, and a co-working room for about 25 desks. It fulfills the minimum office requirements and hence it will be known as the "Minimum Viable Office" or MVO.
